By The End Of Tonight, a
Houston quartet (James Templeton on bass, Jeff Wilson on drums, Josh Smith on guitar, Stefan Mach on guitar), debuted with the 25-minute EP
Fireworks on Ice (2004),
that introduced their instrumental post-rock via
the eleven-minute It's Christmas Time Again,
the hysterical convolutions
of Videogames Buried In The Desert and
Delirious Where Have You Been, and the uneasy tension of
Sleeping While Driving Prevents Old Age, all of them fueled
by a guitar technique that often echoes jazz-rock guitarists such as
John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth
and Nels Cline.
A Tribute To Tigers (Temporary Residence, 2005), a 34-minute
mini-album,
refined their aesthetic of subjecting melodies to irrational sequences of
harmonic torture.
The eight-minute overture 4's 5's And the Piano That Never Made It Home
alternates between hailstorms of collective jamming and
quiet shimmering guitar notes over tenuous drums and bass,
explosive hard-rock riffs and tempo shifts a` la prog-rock
(with peaks of head-banging thrash).
The derivation from Slint and
Godspeed You Black Emperor might be obvious,
but the exuberance is new.
BTEOT are lean and mean compared with their predecessors (who tended to be
"verbose" and redundant).
The controlled frenzy of the first track leads
to the much more tumultuous, savagely angular, syncopated, cubistic constructs of Stop, Drop and Roll Does Not Work in Hell.
The torrential and furious Setting Sail in April, whose power-riffs
recur like seismic waves,
and the majestic and chaotic crescendo of Tigers
prove the point that this is not just "moody" music. This music is
aggressive and highly emotional, where post-rock used to be relatively anemic
and cold.

La derivazione dagli Slint e dai Godspeed You Black Emperor può essere ovvia ma l’esuberanza è del tutto nuova.
BTEOT sono inclini e grezzi se comparati con i loro predecessori (che tendevano ad essere prolissi e ridondanti).
