Demolition Squad,
performing as Biomechanique with DJ Luke Collins,
was the Los Angeles-based duo of
veteran St Louis jazz saxophonist Jim Goetsch (aka Subversive Element)
and veteran Japanese keyboardist Kim Koschka, the latter already author of
Metamusik (King, 1991), a collection of
synclavier interpretations of classical music, soon to be followed by
Bella Maniera, the official manifesto of his "neo-mannerism".
Fluent in both avantgarde music and jazz-rock, Demolition Squad (operating since
1993) incorporated drum'n'bass, dub, trip-hop, world-music, orchestral effects
and electronics to compose Hit It (Psychotropic, 2000), one of the
most original drum'n'bass exercises of all time, and probably the one boasting
the most massive beats.
Subversive Element is documented on
Road Trip (2007) and Night Music (2016),
and a collaboration with Dean De Benedictis' Stratos: Subversive Element + The Stratos Ensemble – 3 2 14 (2014).
Road Trip (2007) was the reference point:
abstract electronic soundscapes,
processed soprano saxophone
and digital beats.
Goetsch turned to ambient cosmic music for synth and sequencer as Double Image.
Goetsch played soprano sax and synthesizer in Baker's Brew, formed by drummer
Maury Baker
with Daniel Coffeng on guitar and Carl Royce on bass, which released
New Colors (2017),
Elements (2018),
Lowdown (2018),
Mystery (2018),
Side Trip (2018),
New Works (2021),
New Territory (2022),
etc.
