The Fresh & Onlys, formed in San Francisco by Shayde Sartin ( Skygreen Leopards' bassist) and Tim Cohen,
played messy Sixties-style garage-rock on
Grey-Eyed Girls (Woodsist, 2009) and
Fresh & Onlys (Castle Face, 2009),
moving towards a cleaner sound on
Play It Strange (In The Red, 2010), that includes
the eight-minute Tropical Island Suite and the galopping twangy
Waterfall.
Their super-prolific output was uneven, to say the least (most), with
the six-song EP Play August In My Mind (Captured Tracks, 2010)
probably being the best introduction and the single
Second One To Know
and the title-track from the EP Secret Walls (Sacred Bones, 2011)
being perhaps the catchiest songs they recorded.
Tim Cohen was also active as Amocoma (black metal)
and released the solo album
Two Sides of Tim Cohen (Secret Seven, 2009).
Fresh & Onlys' Tim Cohen and Ray's Vast Basement's Jon Bernson formed the
Window Twins that debuted
I'm This Tall City (Broken Twilight, 2009).
Tim Cohen launched his solo career as a masterful and old-fashioned
popsmith on
Laugh Tracks (Captured Tracks, 2010), with Oh Oh Oh.
Magic Trick (Captured Tracks, 2011) debuted Cohen's new band, still in
the same power-pop vein, with a corollary in
the EP Bad Blood (Captured Tracks, 2011), with
Rock Bottom and
Delicate Creatures.
Magic Trick became a real band for Glad Birth Of Love (Empty Cellar, 2011),
that has little in common with its predecessor, being structured in four
lengthy loose
post-folk
songs a` la Talk Talk.
