The Libertines were the vanguard of the new Brit-pop generation thanks to Up the Bracket (Rough Trade, 2003), an album that represented the zeitgeist of Britain at the turn of the century the same way that the early Rolling Stones represented the Swinging London, the early Who represented the mod generation, the Clash represented the punk generation, etc. Like the Clash, the Libertines borrowed freely from a multitude of genres to produce catchy and driving songs. If Horrow Show is their version of devilish rock'n'roll (but it's a watered-down version of Surgery) and Time For Heroes is hummable second-hand punk-pop (although with great guitar work), the swinging blues-rock Vertigo, the melodic punk-rock I Get Along a` la New York Dolls, the mod-like anthem Boys In The Band, and, best, the bouncy Up The Bracket, a cross between the Sex Pistols and the Kinks do stand up to a comparison with the classics... for a few minutes.

The Libertines (Rough Trade, 2004) contains Can't Stand Me Now.

Pete Doherty formed the Babyshambles that released Down in Albion (2005) and Shotter's Nation (2007).

Time For Heroes (Rough Trade, 2007) is a Libertines compilation.

Peter Doherty debuted as a solo artist with Grace/Wastelands (Astralwerks, 2009), a charming and unassuming exercise in nostalgia that runs the gamut from smoky blues to traditional jazz, from soul ballad to pop a` la Scott Walker, from Brit-pop to folk-rock.

Meanwhile the Babyshambles released Sequel to the Prequel (2013).

The Libertines returned after a long hiatus with the album Anthems for Doomed Youth (2015).
