Los Angeles' band
Kara's Flowers, fronted by
vocalist Adam Levine and featuring keyboardist Jesse Carmichael,
released We Like Digging? (1995) and The Fourth World (1997)
before reforming as
Maroon 5 with guitarist James Valentine.
Songs About Jane (2002) contained their first hit,
the hard-rocking funk-pop shuffle Harder to Breathe, and
It Won't Be Soon Before Long (2007) contained the
chart-topping single Makes Me Wonder (not too different from what
Michael Jackson was doing two decades earlier) but little else.
The quality further declined on Hands All Over (2010) but the
contemporary single Moves like Jagger topped the sales charts again,
basically a softer and more danceable version of
Harder to Breathe.
One More Night, off Overexposed (2012), emphasized reggae and
hip-hop beats and became an even bigger hit.
The sequence of hits continued with
Animals and Sugar (another Michael Jackson-ian song, one of
the most popular songs of the decade),
off V (2014),
and with the trap ballad Girls Like You (the most tolerable of these
obnoxious songs), off Red Pill Blues (2017).
By 2019 they had sold more than 100 million records.
