Vermont's well-travelled and multi-lingual singer-songwriter
Anais Mitchell debuted with the spartan
The Song They Sang When Rome Fell (2002), but truly blossomed with
the hyper-realistic wartime Hymns for the Exiled (2004).
While working on the transitional The Brightness (2007),
Mitchell composed the folk opera Hadestown (2006) that retells
an ancient Greek myth setting it in the USA of the 2000s, and eventually
recorded it on Hadestown (Righteous Babe, 2010) with an orchestra
and an all-star cast of Bon Iver, Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Ben Knox Miller,
Petra Haden, etc.
Young Man In America (2012) offers the typical hodgepodge of private
and public themes that became the dogma of singer-songwriters of the 1970s.
The humbler setting shifts the focus to her erudite lyrics, but also exposes the
bland simplicity of the music.
