Morning 40 Federation is a New Orleans ensemble that joyvially mixes
guitars, keyboards and horns.
As introduced by You My Brother (Tekito, 2000), the band comes through
as the Shonen Knife of rhythm and blues
and/or the Blues Explosion of brass bands.
The album has its share of
energetic southern funk-rock a` la Little Feat with touches of the Band's
roots-rock (Frenchy Got Bald Head, Chili Cheese Fries) and
even more energetic southern boogie
(Mischievous, Bottom Shelf Blues), but the core and the heart
of the project is elsewhere, in the stomping charleston of
Itsy Bitsy Brother, in the
terrifying boogie attack of Gotta Nickel (Captain Beefheart meets
the Residents), in the
drunkards' singalong (Tom Waits meets the Platters) of
Stinky, in the
snoring blues (Tom Waits singing Bob Dylan's Rainy day Women) of
Sorry Mom ,
witty and sometimes grotesques ditties that
singer Josh Cohen and guitarist Bailey Smith impale on the dreadful
pace of the rhythm and horn section.

I Morning 40 Federation
sono un complesso che unisce chitarre, tastiere e corni in modo gioviale. Il
gruppo sarebbe l'equivalente degli Shonen Knife nel loro alter-ego r&b e/o
i Blues Explosion nei panni di una banda di ottoni, come dimostra You My
Brother (Tekito, 2000). L'album ha la sua porzione di energico funk-rock
sudista ispirato ai Little Feat, benché sia lievemente contaminato dal
roots-rock dei Band (Frenchy Got Balad Head, Chili Cheese Fries) e presenti
tracce di boogie sudista ancora più energiche (Mischievous, Bottom Shelf
Blues). Ma il nucleo e il cuore del progetto sono altrove: nel charleston
martellante di Itsy Bitsy Finger, nel terrificante attacco boogie di Gotta
Nickel (dove Captain Beefheart incontra i Residents), nel canto ebbro di Stinky
(dove Tom Waits incontra i Platters), nel blues russante di Sorry Mom (come
seTom Waits cantasse Rainy Day Women di Bob Dylan): tutti motivetti spiritose
e, a volte, grotteschi che il cantante Josh Cohen e il chitarrista Bailey Smith
trafiggono nello spaventoso andamento della sezione dei corni.
