Toronto's
Most Serene Republic
belong to the same generation as Broken Social Scene.
What made the Most Serene Republic unique, though, were the
dense and eccentric arrangements of
Underwater Cinematographer (Arts & Crafts, 2005), that, borrowing
and estranging ideas from psychedelic and progressive rock,
turned the album into an exhilarating sonic merry-go-round.
Population (Arts & Crafts, 2007) was another frantic collage of
more or less random studio effects, except it was so delirious to sound goofy.
The contrast between the erudite foundations of the music and its jovial
exterior represented both the strength and the weakness of the group's
concept.
