After the conventional Reign of the Malicious (2002) and
Demise (2004),
Chicago's Nachtmystium marked the movement away from black metal and towards a sound that incorporated catchy melodies and psychedelic passages, especially with their third album Instinct Decay (2006).
Assassins (2008) was wildly less interesting, despite attempts to
crossover into more melodic music as well as more industrial rhythms.
Addicts - Black Meddle Pt.2 (Century Media, 2010), a concept album about
drug addition that relied on the stellar lineup of
vocalist Blake Judd, guitarist Jeff Wilson, synth-man Sanford Parker, Will Lindsay of Wolves In The Throne Room and Leviathan's drummer Wrest, expanded the
stylitic range in both directions (pop and industrial).
