Los Angeles-area gospel singer Katy Perry
(Katheryn Hudson)
converted to dance-pop
with One of the Boys (2008), notably the hit
I Kissed a Girl (produced by the ubiquitous Swedish hitmaker Max Martin)
and its follow-up Hot n Cold.
Teenage Dream (2010), composed by
Bonnie Mckee,
debuted at the top of the charts and later became an
even bigger best-seller thanks to the Max Martin-penned singles
Last Friday Night,
California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework and
especially E.T..
It was the first album since Michael Jackson's Bad to spawn
five number-one singles.
But that was also the peak of her career.
Martin also penned her subsequent hits
Part of Me (2012),
Roar (2013) and
Dark Horse (2014), the latter two taken from Prism (2013).
By 2023 Roar
was one of the most-watched videos of all time on YouTube, and both
Roar and
Dark Horse
had more than one billion streams on Spotify.
But her fortune declined very rapidly and she never had another top hit.
Witness (2017), Smile (2020) and
143 (2024)
were the albums of the following decade.
In 2025 she flew on a spaceship out of the Earth's atmosphere.
