Standard is a Seattle band featuring guitarist Tim Putnam and keyboardist
Jay Clarke. Their first album,
World's Greatest (Barbaric, 2001), served atmospheric songs wrapped
in the mood of emo-core, but still anchored to harsh guitars.
Standard enrolled another keyboardist, Gail Buchanan, for
August (Touch & Go, 2002), and the band polished the sound so that
the songs flow more naturally. Oscillating between prog-rock and glam-rock,
the arrangements highlight the melodies rather than fighting them
(A Year Of Seconds, the exotic Paper).
Even better, Behind The Screens packs the energy of punk-rock in the
fluid structures of Standard.
Torn between singer-songwriter meditations and "emo" confessions,
Putnam exploits the thicker textures to construct complex and
lengthy narratives such as Bells To The Boxer and
When Everything Went Wrong, achieving a heart-felt melodrama in the
closing, piano-driven ballad The Quiet Bar.

(Barbaric, 2001), propone canzoni atmosferiche avvolte nello spirito
glam-rock, fanno risaltare le melodie piuttosto che contrastarle (A Year Of
Seconds, l'esotica Paper). L'ulteriormente migliore Behind The Screen riempe le
Bells To The Boxer e When Everything Went Wrong, ottenendo un sincero
melodramma nella concludente ballata pianistica The Quiet Bar.
