Upsilon Acrux, formed in San Diego by guitarist Paul Lai, debuted with a
cerebral, spastic and frontal jazzcore sound, documented on the albums
In the Acrux of the Upsilon King (1999) and
The Last Pirates of Upsilon (1999), including
the twelve-minute Descension,
the eleven-minute Dark Rainbow and
the nine-minute Nails Wine Dio.
The mini-album Last Train Out (2001) and
Volucris Avis Dirae-Arum (2004), that featured two drummers,
signaled a less confrontational stance and delivered a higher degree of
post-rock posturing. The longest track on these was less than eight-minute long.
Galapagos Momentum (Cuneiform, 2007), instead, featured two guitarists,
and completed the evolution towards
Don Caballero's instrumental post-rock
with an additional degree of fractured, syncopated, atonal emphasis.
The frantic minimalist repetition of Who's Running Shit and
Expiration Date,
yhr limping clownish Pere Ubu-esque Petrovich,
the convoluted Minutemen-esque funk-jazz-punk of Boa Vs. Crab and Touched By God
rehash old habits.
The longest track, Hiking Up Feel Good Mountain, introduces enough melody
and structure to open new horizons.

cerebrale e spastico, documentato sugli album In the Acrux of the Upsilon King (1999) e The Last Pirates of Upsilon (1999), che includevano i dodici minuti
Il mini-album Last Train Out (2001) e Volucris
durata inferiore agli otto minuti.
Galapagos Momentum (Cuneiform, 2007) aveva
sincopata e fratturata.
tendenze. La traccia pił lunga, Hiking Up Feel Good Mountain,
orizzonti.
