DJ Arafat
(Didier Houon), born in Ivory Coast, migrated illegally to France
and rose to become the most popular musician of the
Coupe'-Decale' movement, a rap subgenre that emerged in the night-clubs of Abidjan during Ivory Coast's civil war.
He established the cliche' of the genre with the
EP Goudron Noir (2003) and the album
Femmes (2005), and then simply made it more and more appealing to the
Europop audience on
Don De Dieu (2008), with Kpangor,
Gladiator (2010)
Commandant Zabra (2012),
Kpankaka (2012),
Chebeler (2013).
He died in 2019 in a motorcycle accident.
