Let's Eat Grandma, i.e. the duo of English
teenage girls
Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth, debuted with
I Gemini (2016), a collection of humble bedroom-pop with shy electronic
coloring.
There are psychedelic harmonies (Deep Six Textbook),
there is kindergarten-pop (Chimpanzees in Canopies),
and some ambient interludes (like the opening of Chocolate Sludge Cake).
Sleep Song sounds like a drunk Penguin Cafè Orchestra.
Eat Shiitake Mushrooms begins as
primitive synth-pop a` la Trio
and ends as lo-fi hip-hop.
I'm All Ears (2018) opens with the
gothic electronic instrumental Whitewater. It's a misleading opener.
Soon we find ourselves into mainstream pop muzak with the
tormented soul-pop ballad Hot Pink, crafted by Sophie, and Falling Into Me.
The album includes two lengthy pieces: while
Cool & Collected (09:17) is a creative work of
dramatic delivery over an abstract soundscape,
Donnie Darko (11:19) quickly morphs into old-fashioned disco-music and then doesn't go anywhere.
The synths and the drum-machines sweep into Two Ribbons (2022).
The songs emanate
repeated feelings of dejavu of the 1980s
(the catchy booming synth-pop ditty Happy New Year,
the propulsive Watching You Go, etc).
The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself (2022) is the soundtrack to a TV series.
