Sacramento-based producer and singer-songwriter
Victoria Monet McCants, who contributed lyrics to all of
Ariana Grande's albums between 2013 and 2020,
launched her solo career with the nine-song mini-album Jaguar (2020)
smooth funk-soul of the 1990s.
Jaguar II (2023) codified her silky style
in Smoke (an echo of early electronic dance-pop of the 1990s),
and in the undulating funk-soul shuffle On My Mama.
Her talent as a delicate vocalist shines in the Brazilian-tinged Alright, produced by Kaytranada.
Collaborations with
reggae singer Buju Banton on Party Girl
and funk band Earth, Wind and Fire on Hollywood
add variety to a generally somnolent album, but also increase the feeling
of "1990s dejavu".
