New York's singer-songwriter Caroline Polachek, originally half of synth-pop duo Chairlift that released Does You Inspire You (2008), Something (2012) and Moth (2016), and a member of the 12-people all-female choir Girl Crisis in 2008-13,
debuted solo under the moniker Ramona Lisa with the album
Arcadia (2014), entirely played, sung and arranged by her (on computers and electronic keyboards).
She again self-produced her second solo album,
Drawing the Target Around the Arrow (2017), credited to• CE, which is basically ambient music for relaxation, performed entirely on sine waves.
She began a collaboration with PC Music's Danny Harle, who became her trusted
producer, on the first album credited to her real name,
Pang (2019), a collection of
electronic pop songs based on trivial beats and "artsy" melodies
(Door, Ocean of Tears). It was a major turnaround, billing her
simply as the next pop singer.
Desire I Want To Turn Into You (2023) continued in that tedious derivative dance-pop style with stronger (or just louder) beats and more assured vocals,
thanks to
Daniel Nigro and Jim-E Stack (i.e. James Harmon Stack) helping out
Danny Harle in production and arrangement duties.
The album's hits were
Bunny Is a Rider,
Billions and
Welcome to My Island.
But most of the album is both repetitive and unoriginal, a deadly combination.
