New York state's
trio Undeath, fronted by
growling vocalist Alexander Jones,
whose early line-up had debuted with the
EPs Demo ’19 (2019) and Sentient Autolysis (2019),
staged a revival of 1990s death-metal on
Lesions of a Different Kind (2020),
excelling at murky mid-tempo dirges like
Lesions of a Different Kind,
Entranced by the Pendulum and especially
Acidic Twilight Visions.
Unfortunately the second part sounds like a diligent reenactment of stereotypes
and little else.
The booming, thick production of
It's Time?...?To Rise From the Grave (2022) cannot hide the fundamental
banality of the songs. The avalanche of riffs is overwhelming, and
the tornado of drumming is relentless and asphyxiating, but this is a case in which the whole is less than the parts.
Defiled Again and Necrobionics are the songs that match the ferocity of their heroes.
The Deep Purple-esque progression in Rise From The Grave and the
melodic chorus of Human Chandelier amount to very little.
The rest is background music for horror movies.
